Ideal Shed Design for Murrah Buffaloes

A well-designed shed minimizes stress, controls diseases, and maximizes milk production. When building housing for Murrah buffaloes, consider these critical elements:

    1. Direction and Ventilation

    • Orientation: The long axis of the shed should run East to West. This ensures the shed remains cool in summer while allowing winter sunlight to dry the floors.
    • Height: The roof should be at least 10 to 12 feet high at the eaves to ensure hot air escapes.

    2. Floor Space Requirements

A resting adult Murrah buffalo requires at least 4x5 square meters of covered space and an equal or larger open paddock space to move freely. Overcrowding leads to aggressive behavior and poor hygiene.

    3. Floor Design

    • Material: Rough concrete or grooved brick is ideal to prevent slipping.
    • Slope: The floor must have a gradient of 1-1.5% sloping toward a drainage channel to ensure urine and wash-water drain instantly, keeping the bedding dry.

    4. Manger (Feeding Trough)

Provide 2-2.5 feet of continuous manger space per animal. The manger floor should be slightly higher than the standing floor so the buffalo doesn’t strain its neck while eating.

    5. Comfort Features

Add rubber cow mats in the resting area. This reduces the incidence of lameness and hock lesions, directly impacting the animal's longevity.
