Controlling Ticks and Lice in Buffaloes

Tick and lice infestations are not just nuisances; they are silent killers. They drain blood, cause severe anemia, drop milk production, and transmit deadly diseases like Theileriosis and Babesiosis.

Recognizing the Problem

Look closely at the soft skin areas: under the tail, around the udder, inside the ears, and along the neck. Excessive rubbing against walls or a dull, patchy coat are clear indicators.

Chemical Control Methods

• Acaricide Sprays: Cypermethrin or Amitraz-based sprays are highly effective. Spray the animal thoroughly, ensuring the liquid reaches the skin.
• Important: Always follow the vet's dilution ratio strictly. Toxins can be absorbed through the skin or ingested.

Environmental Control (The Missing Step)

Killing ticks on the buffalo solves only 10% of the problem. 90% of ticks live in the cracks, crevices, and mud of the farm shed.

• Use a blowtorch (flame gun) on the brick walls and corners to burn tick eggs.
• Spray the shed with the same acaricide solution once a week during peak summer and monsoon seasons.

Herbal/Organic Alternatives

For organic farms, a mixture of Neem leaves, Camphor (Kapur), and mustard oil applied to the skin acts as an excellent natural repellent without risking chemical residues in the milk.
