Complete Feeding Guide for Murrah Buffalo
Feeding constitutes 60-70% of the total cost of dairy farming. A balanced diet is critical not just for milk production, but for the overall health and reproductive capability of your Murrah buffalo.
The Balanced Diet Components
A buffalo's daily diet must be a mix of three things:
- Green Fodder (60-70%): Maize, Berseem, Sorghum (Jowar), or Napier grass. This provides essential vitamins and bulk.
- Dry Fodder (30-40%): Wheat straw (Bhusa) or Paddy straw. This provides fiber for digestion.
- Concentrates (Dana): A mix of grains, oil cakes (Khal), and bran. This provides energy and protein for milk production.
Daily Requirement Calculation
For a milking buffalo:
- Maintenance: 1.5 to 2 kg of concentrate mix just to keep her body healthy.
- Production: Add 1 kg of concentrate for every 2-2.5 liters of milk produced.
- Example: If your buffalo gives 10 liters of milk, she needs approx 2 kg (maintenance) + 4 kg (for milk) = 6 kg of concentrate daily.
Mineral Mixture Importance
Never skip the mineral mixture. Adding 50-70 grams of high-quality mineral mixture to the daily feed prevents infertility and bone issues.
Water
Always ensure fresh clean water is available 24/7.
