How to Identify a Pure Murrah Buffalo
When buying a buffalo, many farmers get tricked into buying cross-breeds. Here are the non-negotiable traits of a pure Murrah.
1. Horn Shape
The most distinct feature is the horns. They should be tightly curled, spiraling inward. They should not be long or open.
2. Body Color
The coat should be Jet Black. There should be no white markings on the forehead or legs (though a small white switch on the tail is sometimes acceptable). Light, brownish skin indicates cross-breeding.
3. Skin and Tail
- Skin: Should be soft, thin, and shiny (pliable). Thick, rough skin is a bad sign.
- Tail: Should be long and thin, reaching up to the hocks.
4. Udder Characteristics
Look for a well-developed udder with prominent, zig-zag milk veins. The teats should be uniform in size and evenly spaced.
