High fat or high volume? A detailed economic comparison for Indian farmers.
Murrah Buffalo vs. Jersey Cow
This is a classic debate. The answer depends on your market.
Murrah Buffalo
- Pros: High fat milk (gets better price), resistant to diseases, can survive on coarser feed, male calves/old animals have some meat value (where legal).
- Cons: Late maturity, seasonal breeder, longer dry period.
Jersey Cow
- Pros: Early maturity, calves every year, milk yield is decent.
- Cons: Low fat (lower price), very sensitive to heat/disease, high feed cost.
Verdict: If you are selling milk to a cooperative/fat-based market, go for Murrah. If selling liquid milk legally directly to consumers who want quantity, cows might work.
