    Murrah vs Nili-Ravi: Breed Comparison

When setting up a commercial buffalo farm, the two biggest heavyweights in the Indian subcontinent are the Murrah and the Nili-Ravi. Here is a quick comparison to help you choose perfectly.

    Murrah Buffalo

    • Origin: Haryana (Rohtak, Hisar, Jind).
    • Appearance: Jet black body, tightly curled horns, very slender face.
    • Milk Yield: Averages 2,500 to 3,500 liters per lactation (can exceed 4,000 in top herds).
    • Fat Content: 7% to 8.5%.
    • Best For: Hotter plains and regions prioritizing heavy commercial setups requiring zero compromises on fat percentages.

    Nili-Ravi Buffalo

    • Origin: Punjab region (along the banks of the Sutlej and Ravi rivers).
    • Appearance: Black with distinct "Panj Kalian" marks (five white markings on the forehead, face, muzzle, and legs). Very striking "wall eyes" (white irises) are common.
    • Milk Yield: Averages 2,200 to 3,000 liters.
    • Fat Content: 6.5% to 8%.
    • Best For: Colder regions close to rivers. They are excellent foragers and adapt wonderfully in riverine/semi-aquatic environments.

Summary: While both are stellar animals, Murrah slightly edges out the Nili-Ravi in overall daily milk yield peaks and fat consistency, making it the preferred choice for commercial dairy integration.
