Mastitis is the biggest profit killer. Learn how to detect it early and prevent it with hygiene.
Preventing Mastitis in Murrah Buffaloes
Mastitis (udder infection) causes huge losses by turning good milk into waste and potentially permanently damaging the udder.
Detection
- Milk looks watery or has flakes/clots.
- Udder feels hot, hard, or swollen.
- Animal kicks during milking due to pain.
Prevention Checklist
- Hygiene: Wash hands and udder with potassium permanganate solution before milking.
- Post-Milking Dip: Dip teats in a germicide solution immediately after milking.
- Stand Time: Keep the buffalo standing for 30 minutes after milking (offer fresh food) to allow the teat canal to close.
- Dry Bedding: Bacteria thrive in wet mud. Keep the sitting area dry and limed.
