Preventing Seasonal Diseases: A Year-Round Guide for Murrah Buffaloes
Disease prevention is always cheaper than cure. In the world of dairy farming, a single outbreak can wipe out a year's profit.
Monsoon Risks: Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS)
The rainy season brings a high risk of HS and Black Quarter (BQ). These are rapid-onset bacterial diseases that can be fatal within 24 hours. Action: Vaccinate in May-June, just before the rains begin.
Winter Risks: Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)
FMD is highly contagious and, while not always fatal for adults, it drastically reduces milk yield and causes permanent damage to the animal's productivity. Action: Bi-annual vaccination (usually September and March) is mandatory.
Summer Risks: Heat Stress and Parasites
Murrah buffaloes are black-skinned and absorb heat quickly. Heat stress leads to a 20-30% drop in milk yield. Action: Provide wallowing tanks or misting fans. Ensure 24/7 access to cold, clean water.
Hygiene Protocols
- Use lime powder on the floors weekly.
- Wash the udder with potassium permanganate before milking.
- Isolate new animals for 15 days before introducing them to the main herd.
