Murrah Buffalo Management & Care Guide

Optimizing the daily management of your Murrah buffaloes for maximum productivity and longevity.

Murrah Buffalo Management & Care Guide

Proper management is the difference between a struggling farm and a flourishing dairy business. Murrah buffaloes are sensitive creatures that respond exceptionally well to consistent care, balanced nutrition, and comfortable housing.

    1. Professional Housing & Shelter

Comfortable housing can increase milk yield by up to 20% by reducing stress and energy expenditure for thermoregulation.

    Space Requirements

    • Adult Cow: 4-5 square meters of covered area and 8-10 square meters of open paddock.
    • Pregnant Cow: Should be moved to a larger calving pen (12-15 sqm) one week before delivery.
    • Calves: Need dry, draft-free pens with plenty of sunlight.

    Flooring & Ventilation

    • Flooring: Should be non-slippery (grooved concrete is best) and have a 1-inch slope for every 4 feet for easy drainage.
    • Ventilation: High ceilings (10-12 feet) and open-sided sheds ensure air circulation. In hot climates, ceiling fans are essential.
    • Wallowing Tank: Buffaloes love water. A shallow tank for wallowing or regular water splashing (showering) 2-3 times a day during summer is mandatory for heat management.

    2. Advanced Feeding Strategy

Feeding is 70% of the cost of milk production. Accuracy is key.

    The "Dry Matter" Rule

An adult Murrah needs 2.5% to 3% of its body weight in Dry Matter (DM) daily.

    • Green Fodder: High-quality Greens (Berseem, Maize, Sorghum) - 30-40 kg.
    • Dry Fodder: Wheat straw or paddy straw - 4-6 kg to provide fiber.
    • Concentrate Feed:
      • Maintenance: 1.5 - 2 kg daily.
      • Production: 1 kg for every 2-2.5 kg of milk produced.
      • Pregnancy: Extra 1-2 kg in the last trimester.

    Mineral & Water Requirements

    • Mineral Mixture: 50-80g daily is essential for regular heat cycles and immunity.
    • Water: Provide 70-100 liters of clean, fresh water daily. Buffaloes drink more than cows because of their massive body size and high milk fat.

    3. Daily Management Routine

Consistency reduces cortisol levels in buffaloes, leading to better let-down of milk.

    1. Grooming: Daily brushing removes dead hair and parasites while improving blood circulation.
    2. Exercise: A small open paddock allows for natural movement, which is critical for hoof health and detecting heat signs.
    3. Hoof Care: Regular inspection for wounds or overgrowth prevents lameness.
    4. Cleaning: Snatched manure should be removed 3-4 times a day to maintain udder hygiene.

    4. Summer Management (Critical)

Murrah buffaloes are jet black and have fewer sweat glands than cows, making them highly susceptible to heat stress.

    • Morning/Evening Feeding: Feed the bulk of the concentrate during the cooler hours of the day.
    • Mist/Sprinkler Systems: In commercial farms, auto-sprinklers combined with fans can significantly maintain peak production during peak summer.

By following these management protocols, you ensure your Murrah herd reaches its full genetic potential for milk production.
