Understanding Murrah Milk Yield
Successful dairy farming is about managing the 305-day marathon, not just the first 30 days of peak yield.
Murrah Buffalo Milk Yield Categories
| Category | Daily Yield | Lactation Yield | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average Yield | 8-12 L | 1,800-2,500 L | Under typical farm conditions |
| Good Yield | 12-18 L | 2,500-3,500 L | With optimized management |
| Excellent Yield | 18-25 L | 3,500-4,500 L | Elite bloodlines, ideal conditions |
| Record Yield | 25+ L | 5,000+ L | Competition-level animals |
Mastering the 305-Day Marathon: The Three Phases
The lactation curve of a Murrah buffalo is differnet from a cow. Buffaloes tend to have a "slow start" but a much more stable persistency if managed correctly.
- Early Lactation (Day 1-100): This is the high-stress "Peak" phase. The animal is in a Negative Energy Balance (NEB). Focus on high-energy density diets to prevent excessive body weight loss, which can lead to infertility.
- Mid Lactation (Day 101-200): The goal here is Persistency. You want the milk yield to drop as slowly as possible (ideally less than 8-10% per month). This is the most profitable phase for the farmer.
- Late Lactation (Day 201-305): During this phase, the buffalo is likely pregnant again. The focus shifts from maximum milk to supporting the growing fetus and "Steaming Up" for the next cycle.
The Dry Period: It is critical to stop milking ("Dry Off") the animal at least 60 days before the next expected calving to allow the udder tissues to regenerate.
